The
Practical Evagrius (Fall, 2007)
On the
Christian life as seen by Evagrius Ponticus
The aim of
the class is
practical: to glean what we can from Evagrius that will help us to
live better as Christians. Though he lived in a very different time
and place, Evagrius is a keep observer of Christian life, an many
insights can be readily applied to our lives.
Note that
after two
Thursday classes, we move to Tuesday for the remainder of the class.
Mass in both cases will be at 6 in the rectory Oratory.
Classes meet
from 7 to
8:30.
Reading is
not
required, but can be useful. The main texts are the Praktikos,
and the Chapters on Prayer. These are printed together in
English in a book of the same title by John Eudes Bamberger,
published by the Cistercian Press. Both are also available on-line
at
http://www.ldysinger.com/Evagrius/00a_start.htm
Bamberger's
translations tend to be readable and a bit free; I have not studied
Fr Dysinger's (the on-line ones). The Chapters on Prayer is
also to be found in the Philokalia,
under St Nilus.
